Best Low-Tech Aquarium Plants: No CO2, No Hassle
You do not need CO2 injection or expensive equipment to have a beautiful planted aquarium. These are the best low-tech aquarium plants that thrive with just decent lighting, a basic fertiliser, and a weekly water change.
Best Low-Tech Aquarium Plants: No CO2, No Hassle
The idea that you need CO2 injection and high-powered lighting to grow aquarium plants is one of the biggest misconceptions in the hobby. A huge range of beautiful, interesting plants grow excellently in low-tech setups — all they need is decent light, a basic fertiliser, and the routine maintenance you are already doing.
What Is a Low-Tech Setup?
A low-tech planted tank uses:
- Standard LED lighting at moderate intensity (no specialised plant lighting required)
- Regular or planted substrate (no mandatory active soil)
- No CO2 injection (though liquid carbon supplements help)
- Basic liquid fertiliser: Seachem Flourish once or twice a week is sufficient for most low-tech plants
- Consistent water changes: 25–30% weekly
The Best Low-Tech Plants
1. Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)
The gold standard of beginner plants. Attach to driftwood, grow in any light, no special substrate, never needs CO2. Nearly impossible to kill.
2. Anubias (Anubias barteri, A. nana)
Thick, tough, dark leaves that resist plant-eating fish. Attaches to hardscape. Grows very slowly but is extremely long-lived and low maintenance.
3. Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri)
Grows anywhere, attaches to anything, provides habitat for shrimp and fry. Perfect for softening hardscape and creating natural-looking moss patches.
4. Cryptocoryne wendtii
Once established, Crypts are extremely low maintenance and spread slowly to create attractive colonies. Available in green, bronze, and red-brown forms for colour variety.
5. Amazon Sword (Echinodorus bleheri)
A heavy root feeder that becomes magnificent in a large tank. Use API Root Tabs every 3 months and it will thrive without CO2.
6. Vallisneria (Vallisneria spiralis)
Tall, grass-like background plant that spreads rapidly via runners without CO2. Creates a beautiful flowing backdrop that sways in the current.
7. Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum)
Extremely fast-growing and hardy stem plant that can be planted or left to float. Excellent at absorbing excess nutrients and preventing algae in new setups.
8. Water Wisteria (Hygrophila difformis)
Fast-growing, feathery stem plant that adapts to low light surprisingly well. An excellent nutrient sponge and algae preventer.
9. Bucephalandra
Small, compact epiphyte with iridescent leaves that shimmer blue and green under good lighting. Attach to hardscape like Anubias. Extremely low maintenance.
10. Dwarf Sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata)
A grass-like carpeting plant that can create a natural foreground without CO2. Spreads via runners and does not require active substrate.
Fertilising Low-Tech Tanks
Even low-tech plants need nutrients. Dose Seachem Flourish twice weekly after water changes. If you have root-feeding plants like Crypts or Amazon Swords, add API Root Tabs every 3–4 months near their roots.
A low-tech planted tank is lower effort, lower cost, and surprisingly beautiful.
